  1. US Pacific naval base in Oahu, Hawaii, USA,
  2. the scene of a Japanese attack 7 Dec 1941,
  3. which brought the USA into World War II. It
  4. took place while Japanese envoys were holding
  5. so-called peace talks in Washington. More
  6. than 2,000 US servicemen were killed, and a
  7. large part of the US Pacific fleet was
  8. destroyed or damaged during the attack. The
  9. local commanders Admiral Kummel and Lt-Gen
  10. Short were relieved of their posts and held
  11. responsible for the fact that the base was
  12. totally unprepared at the time of the attack,
  13. but recent information indicates that
  14. warnings of the attack given to the USA (by
  15. British intelligence and others) were
  16. withheld from Kummel and Short by President
  17. Roosevelt. US public opinion was very much
  18. against entering the war, and Roosevelt
  19. wanted an excuse to change popular sentiments
  20. and take the USA into the war.
